DIY It Your Way: Something Old to Something New

Hello Everyone!

I have been reminded lately how the threads of time really do come together in a beautiful way. No pun intended! I want to share with you the idea of turning something old into something new with a few special projects that have been or are being made for my daughter.

My mother-in-law recently had a quilter remake my husbands old baby blanket into a new quilt for our daughter. It was so fun for me to see his little worn and very loved blanket become something new again. Not only did I get to see what he slept with all the time as a little boy, but I was able to hear all the stories that came along with it. How sweet! Now, this quilt can be an heirloom for other babies and families to come…and the stories will continue to grow with the family.

Another project that my mother is also sewing up for our daughter is a blanket. My mom will be using the flannel nightgown that she wore during her entire pregnancy with me to make this blanket. She also wore this nightgown during her hospital stay the day I was born. It meant so much to me to know that she had held onto this item to reuse someday for a blanket for a granddaughter. This project is in the middle of being put together, so I will post pictures once it is finished!

I also recently received a beautiful handmade crocheted blanket from my aunt. This blanket was made to go with the nursery bedding, and I couldn’t be happier with it. I am blown away at the talent and perfection it takes to make a piece like this. I have knit a scarf or two in my day…but I would love to learn how to crochet something like this blanket someday.

All of these projects have truly inspired me to hold onto special items to one day give to my children. It also makes you realize how special and meaningful a handmade item can be! Have any of you made an old piece into something new for your family? There are so many ways to go about doing something like this!

Three different ideas, with the same idea behind it…making something special for a new baby to keep warm and cozy with, while making memories and keeping the past memories alive. The idea that old treasures become new again, and how conversations about family history can happen because of something so unique and handmade. Also, the same idea stands for a newly made item. Something new can be just as special, because you know growing memories will be made with that piece. Many handmade items have the idea that it is going to be special, whether it is handmade by a family member or bought online. Someone’s hard work and talent goes into that item. Goodsmiths is the place where you can sell your handmade items to customers who are looking for just that- a one-of-a-kind meaningful piece!
